When I taught school, I always included a unit on medieval life. And our class usually spent a day as monks in a medieval monastery, where one of our main tasks was illuminating — copying and illustrating a book (usually the Bible) in a beautiful way. Kind of like this.
You don’t see illumination too much these days, but it’s making an appearance in the stunning ESV Illuminated Bible that I’m reviewing today. Check it out:
This Bible features the full ESV text alongside 500+ elegantly hand-lettered gold ink illustrations by artist Dana Tanamachi. Her work has been featured by Google, The Wall Street Journal, Random House, and the USPS.
The Bible is printed on cream-colored paper, and the Bible’s single-column text setting and wide margins provide generous space for notes, prayers, and designs. This Bible invites you to creatively engage with and reflect on the beauty of God’s Word. I’ve never gotten into coloring/illustrating/decorating my Bible (yet, at least), but I know many do. This would be a lovely — undeniably lovely! — Bible for that purpose.
There’s a cool ribbon bookmark, and this Bible is substantial. It feels heavy, especially when slid into its matching slipcase. The pages are edged in gold as well — so elegant. This is truly a Bible that could become a family keepsake.
Here’s a video that will show you a bit more about the making of this gorgeous Bible:
