Facts about the Name Princess Charlotte Elizabeth Diana

It’s been an exciting week for royal watchers like me. First, Prince William and Kate’s new baby arriving Saturday morning. It happened so quickly! I woke up Saturday, turned on the computer, and learned that the baby had been born. I hadn’t even known Kate was in labor!

Then, within an hour, I was seeing photos of the family leaving the hospital just ten hours after the birth. I couldn’t help but remember a newspaper clipping I had from Prince William’s birth. The headlines screamed that Diana had left the hospital “an amazing 21 hours after the birth.” Wow — I guess Kate cut that in half.

It was so exciting that the baby was a girl. After all, Charles and Diana had had two boys. The queen herself had had three boys and a single girl. Yes, some of the “lesser royals” had had girls, but there hadn’t been a “big name” royal princess in quite some time.

The next bit of excitement: what would the little princess’s name be?

Now we know: Charlotte Elizabeth Diana, to be known as Her Royal Highness Princess Charlotte of Cambridge.
How about some facts about the name:

  • Charlotte, the feminine form of Charles, is a way to honor William’s dad, Prince Charles. The wife of British King George III (the one who reigned when we Americans broke away) was also named Charlotte.

Another royal Charlotte is Princess Charlotte of Wales, only child of King George IV. Kate’s sister, Pippa Middleton, also has Charlotte as a middle name.

Princess Charlotte of Wales

  • Elizabeth, of course, is a tribute to Queen Elizabeth, William’s grandmother, and it’s the name of the Queen’s late mother as well. And did you know that Elizabeth is Kate’s middle name?
  • Diana, of course of course of course, is in tribute to William’s late mother, Princess Diana. Honestly, I’m a little surprised that full-blown “Diana” made it through, since Diana’s relations with the royals were often not the best. I was thinking William and Kate would be more likely to go with Diana’s middle name, Frances. However, as a Di-afficionado, I’m so happy that they honored her in this way.
  • Did you know: Diana’s brother, Earl Spencer, has a two-year-old daughter named Charlotte Diana?

  1. I think Charlotte is a lovely name. You told us so much information that was new to me. I so appreciate the positive role you play in my life!

  2. I think it’s brilliant! This couple has class.

  3. I was very glad to see Diana’s name there. It didn’t even occur to me that Charlotte was a form of Charles and a tribute to the Prince. It sounds like William and Kate honored as many people as they could with their wee one’s name.

  4. I hope everyone in the royal family is happy with the name. I think that’s all that counts.

  5. I think their choices are beautiful, I am sure there is tons of pressure for the right name and they did it with grace. They honored everyone in a beautiful way! Thanks for the facts, so interesting!!

  6. I love that they used family names to name her. We did that with my kids. I think it is a wonderful way to honor our elders.

Thanks for taking the time to comment. I enjoy hearing your thoughts.
