One of my guilty pleasures is reality TV. I loved Jon and Kate Plus Eight and the Duggars until they went south so to speak. But lately I’ve found a reality TV family I just love, 100%. It’s Jen Arnold and Bill Klein, aka The Little Couple.
Jen Arnold was born Jan 1, 1974. Like Bill, she has skeletal dysplasia, more commonly known as dwarfism (note that “little people” dislike the term “midget”). Jen is now 3’2″ tall, while Bill is 4′. Jen is a neonatologist at Texas Children’s Hospital, while Bill (birthday is October 13) is a business owner with a biology degree.
Their show has been on several years and was kind of under-the-radar for me, but what got my attention was their quest in recent years to start a family. Medical issues led them from trying to have children on their own to adopting, and they decided they wanted to adopt “little people” like themselves. First they adopted Will from China.
Will is such a cheery, happy child — impossible not to like. And he loves cake 🙂
Less than a year later, the family was off to India to get their daughter, Zoey. The family also includes dogs Rocky and Maggie.
This was a bit rockier — Zoey was quite apprehensive at first, and Jen began feeling bad enough that she left the country early to head back to the US, where she was diagnosed with cancer. She immediately began chemotherapy, and thankfully she is now cancer-free.
This family is just so nice. Despite their challenges, they are so kind to each other. You want to be a better person after watching an episode of their show. How great is that?
The Little Couple Religion
What religion do Bill and Jen follow? Although Christianity is not a focus of the show, Jen has said she is a “good Catholic girl,” and episodes have shown the family praying before mealtimes, and making the sign of the cross.
The December 2014 season opener found both Jen and Bill explaining that they had been raised in the Catholic faith, and the baptisms of both Will and Zoey were shown.
The Little Couple House
Bill and Jen’s house is anything but little. Their Houston, Texas home is brand-new, big and beautiful.
The Little Couple airs on Tuesdays at 9 p.m. eastern, on TLC. Do you watch it? If so, what do you love about it?
If you don’t, give the show a try. I’m guessing it will leave you with a smile on your face.
