Today, I feel like I’m getting all Duggars/homeschooling/Little House on the Prairie, and telling you about Fels Naptha Soap.
Why am I characterizing Fels Naptha Soap that way? It may just be my stereotype, but I always associate this soap with homesteading types. I think of it as a big ingredient in homemade laundry soap, and it is indeed that. And, thanks to my lofty status as a Purex Insider and my super-awesome coupon/bargain skills, I’ve always been able to purchase laundry detergent cheaper than I can make it. However, with my area ending double coupons, I may someday be in the position where I need to spend my afternoons whipping up my own toilet cleaner, glass cleaner, baby wipes (even though I don’t have a baby, because that’s just what super housewives do), and yes — laundry soap.
I’m happy to report that I found Fels Naptha Soap to be so much more than just an ingredient in homemade laundry soap.
It purported to remove all kinds of stains, and so I put it to the test: a stubborn spot on one of the girls’ favorite band shirts — see it, just to the bottom right of the soap?
See the stain? Not hardly, huh? That’s because the Fels Naptha did a great job on it.
- great for dirt, grease, and ring around the collar
- great for pre-treating stains; safe for colors
- easier and more effective than sprays
I wondered how the soap got its unusual name. A bit of research reveals that Philadelphia manufacturer Joseph Fels came up with the soap in the 1890s as a home remedy for poison ivy. As for naptha, well, apparently that normally refers to a number of flammable liquid mixtures of hydrocarbons.
