Borax. I’ve heard of it, but never tried it. The first thing I think when I think Borax is homemade laundry detergent, because I know that it’s an ingredient in many homemade laundry detergent recipes.
I am big on saving, but I’ll admit I’ve never made my own laundry detergent. When Purex Insiders sent me a box of Borax to review, I considered making some … for about five minutes. Then I got over that, and explored the other uses of Borax. Turns out, it’s a great addition to your laundry room.
- Borax is a 100% natural mineral from the earth. It’s the common name for sodium tetraborate, a naturally-occurring substance produced by the perpetual evaporation of seasonal lakes.
- Borax naturally softens hard water, which helps your laundry detergent clean more effectively. Did you know that more than 85% of homes have hard water (hard water is defined as water containing calcium and magnesium)?
- Adding 1/2 cup of Borax to each load of laundry will soften your water and improve cleaning, keeping stains from being re-deposited back onto clothes.
- Or — you might want to use it to make your own laundry detergent.
I’ve been adding Borax to my laundry this month, and it is coming out bright and clean. I recommend this product!

My Grandma Schulte and later my mother, made their own lye soap. In fact I still have a very little piece left of Mother’s. When I have a difficult stain, I still grab the lye soap and scrub away and – I usually get positive results. I have had a box of Borax sitting on my dryer for YEARS. I guess I finally finished it off. I have no memories of Borax working any miracles in my basement.
When I went to the Amish General Store in December to pick up Jill’s quilt, I bought two bars of the Amish lady’s lye soap.

I used it to take bright red fingernail polish out of my carpet that my DD spilled. If you didn’t know it you wouldn’t see it. Plus I have done a lot of fun activities with the kids with Borax.

I have used Borax to add to my laundry, to clean my toilet, and to get rid of ants. I love it and it is so versatile. It can be toxic to small children and animals though, so take care not to leave it anywhere they can get to it, just as you would any other cleaner. I hope I win, my box is running low!

I love Borax! I use it in every wash. I read once where it was a good thing to wash your clothes in it if you were prone to yeast infections. And, I use it for acne flare ups. I mix it with my face and body cleaners (makes a great exfoliator for the skin). This stuff is great!
