Ever heard the phrase, “Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets?” Today, you’ll learn its origin.

Guess what? It relates to Ludwig II.

Ludwig’s grandfather was Bavarian King Ludwig I (yes, Ludwig II was named after him. The two men also share a birthday, August 25, which is the Feast Day of Saint Ludwig as well).

While he was king, Ludwig I became enamored of a dancer named Lola Montez. He began spending so much of his time and the Bavarian peoples’ money on her that he was forced to abdicate.

Hence the phrase, “Whatever Lola wants, Lola gets.”

In an interesting connection, years later Ludwig I’s grandson, Ludwig II, was nearly forced to abdicate over the time and money he spent on opera composer Richard Wagner.

“Whatever Lola Wants, Lola Gets” also was a song in the musical Damn Yankees.
