Vicarious Winter Vacations

It’s winter. It’s snowy. It’s dreary. It’s January.

I would like to be spending time in a warm, sunny location, but realistically that’s not going to happen.

So, what works for me is to take vicarious winter vacations by filling the house with little things that can help me take mental vacations throughout the day.

Walt Disney World ticketI can look at my Disney room key from two years ago and remember the warmth and fun days in the sun …

Sprinkles cupcakes mixI made these cupcakes the other night and was ready to throw away the container, when I thought why? So I kept it, and each time I see it I can imagine myself strolling into a Sprinkle’s Bakery. The cupcake I’m imagining eating is even calorie-free.

Get the idea? Cheer up these long winter days with little things that make you happy. It may not be Disney, but you can go somewhere today briefly – for free! Wasn’t it Plato who said that the idea of things was actually more real than their reality? Hmmm … he may have been on to something. Plan a few vicarious winter vacations to treat yourself in the next few weeks.

  1. This is me in reverse. In the summer when it is so hot my brains are melting, I have to trick myself cooler! (An ice cube in the brassiere can work wonders! 🙂

  2. My trip for the day was to get out and go to the office for several hours and then follow that up with a trip to the grocery, since I had almost emptied my fridge before leaving. It HAD to be done. I should have tried to imagine myself in Hawaii, but I doubt it would have worked. It was all I could do to stay upright in the snow/ice and the windchill was brutal. Maybe I’ll try imagining myself on a vacation this evening, since I’m now inside a relatively warm apartment.
