How to Make Zhu Zhu Pet Clothes

How to Make Zhu Zhu Pet Clothes

Zhu Zhu Pets are shaping up as this Christmas’s hottest toy.  I explained earlier about the Zhu Zhu Pet party we had at our house, and now it seems everyone is wanting accessories for their little hamsters.

You can buy clothes for the pets on Ebay, but if you have even a very minimal amount of sewing skills, you can make your own.  I’ve made some for my kids.

Here’s how to make zhu zhu pet clothes: Cut a piece of your selected fabric 2.75″ x 7″.  Turn under just a bit on both short sides and one long side and sew down (I like to use a zigzag stitch because it looks nicer and is a bit more stabilizing).

Cut a 1/4″ wide piece of elastic 6″ long.  Now, this is the trickiest part:  sew the elastic to the remaining long end of the fabric.  You want the beginning and end of the elastic to meet in the center of this piece so that the elastic forms a loop that can slip over the pet.  The trick is that you want to stretch the elastic as you sew it onto the turned-under fabric, so that the fabric gathers a bit from the elastic.

I hope that made sense.  That’s basically it, although now you can decorate your outfit any way you would like.  Last week I made a set of Wizard of Oz costumes:

wizzhuJust get out your “stash” (doesn’t everyone have one, or is it just me – the pack rat?) of ribbon, lace, buttons, etc., and let your kids create a masterpiece.

Have fun!

  1. I wonder how many children have mothers who spend as much time making things, etc. for their children as you do. I doubt your children realize how blessed they are.

  2. Thanks so much for the easy directions. When I saw zhu zhu pets clothes on ebay, I thought that it couldn’t be that difficult. Thanks so much for taking the time to figure out the measurments! I love your Wizard of Oz idea. That is what my family is dressing as for Halloween so I might just have to steal your idea!
    Thanks again!

  3. The girls want them for Christmas. Grandma checked out your blog and saw the clothes. Very cute : )

  4. How big an empty space do you leave on the elastic when sewing the fabric on to not have the outfit under the pet when it is running around? I want to make some outfits for my niece as a surprise for Christmas since her parents got her two pets. Thanks!

  5. Teresa, I measure the elastic on a finished outfit and the part at the bottom (that shows and goes under the zhu zhu) is 2-2.5″ (unstretched). The animals do “go” with the clothes on, but my kids haven’t had success in getting them to navigate the habittrail with clothes. They do look cute ‘dressed up,’ though. Good luck!

  6. Thank you so much for your inside tip on making zhu zhu clothes!!!I will be paying it forward by creating as many dresses and sleeping bags and giving them away to families who managed to find a zhu zhu for their children.
    Happy Holidays!

  7. Hi,
I have not seen (in person) one of these pets, but have them ordered.
Would you please give me the measurements of one?
    Thank you so much

  8. Barb –
Just measured one of ours; it is 4.5″ nose to tail, 2″ wide and 7″ diameter. Hope that helps 🙂

  9. Thank you so much for posting these tips. I have been elected by my daughter to make clothes for my granddaughter for her 4 pets she received for Christmas. I was looking on e-bay to try to get some ideas and then my daughter found your site. I’m sure they will help a lot.

  10. Do you have the pattern for the sleeping bag??? Boy your clothes are adorable, but the price of things on ebay is ridiculous if they are as easy as you say. Thanking you in advance.

  11. Carol,
Thanks for stopping by. I’ve never made a sleeping bag, but I don’t think they would be too hard … look at a photo of one you like on Ebay, then pull on a Zhu Zhu and some fabric and just cut rectangles in the size you need and sew them together. Same deal for making a pillow. I’m thinking some of the ones on ebay attach the pillow to the sleeping bag with a piece of grosgrain ribbon, which is cute … good luck!

  12. These look amazing! I am hoping that with almost no sewing experience, I will be able to re-create and make these for my daughter’s birthday at the end of this month. Thanks a ton!!

  13. I just love your zhu zhu clothes ..For me to get them sent from ebay to here in New Zealand is dearer than the price of the clothes on there, so was thrilled to find a pattern to make my own. I have bought a couple of hamsters and pet house for my granddaughter for xmas, so will now make the clothes..So wonderful of you to share it with others.. Thanks so much.

  14. I am making clothes & beds for my 2 little girls zhu zhu’s tomorrow
    thanks for the tips

  15. how did you make the clothing for the Zhu Zhu Pets, the are so cute !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  16. I have started knitting little coats as well. Some with the fluffy like fringing wool called flurry. Comes in heaps of different colours. I use size 4mm (8) needles and cast on about 24 stitches and just knit in garter st for about 3 inches (7 1/2 cn) then sew elastic on the same as sjbraun taught us. if using ordinary double knit wool I cast on about 30 sts. I sometimes just do 4 rows in fur for collar. Hope this helps others…have fun

  17. you can also make them like this:
cut the fabric the size of the hamster, and then cut a thin piece that goes from one long end of the fabric to another, and add a little bit more just in case. Glue one side to the long side, kind of near the top (so it does not get caught in the wheels) and the cut a small piece of velcroe. Stick it on the end of the strip and where it meets the fabric. Let it dry and the you are done!!!

  20. Thank you so much for the tips. My niece wanted clothes for her zhu zhu pets for Christmas, but I couldn’t stomach the price of them in stores! I have collected my stash of scraps and am looking forward to creating! Have a blessed Christmas!

  21. How about specifics for a “Princess Outfit” – daughter has been unsuccessful in finding one and Grandma has been called to the rescue! Even a picture or is there a cute hat or any details out there? HELP….Christmas is 4 days away.

  22. They are now selling zhu zhu princess clothes in stores, so you could just go look at those to get ideas for a princess outfit. I bought my neice a zhu zhu pet for her birthday on the 16th and I’ve never heard screaming like I did then. Ironically after i gave her the pet, I got to thinking, “My gosh they are just too cute…and my birthday is coming up in a few days.” So I bought one for myself (I’m 22). I have kingston and he’s just too adorable!

I wanted to make zhu zhu pet clothes for my neice when I visit her again. Thank you so much for the easy to follow tutorial on how to make the clothes!!! Now I just have to figure out how to use a sewing machine.

I also had a thought, a friend of mine is getting married soon so I thought about buying two zhu zhu pets and making a bride and groom outfit for fun. Any tips on how to make a tux would help!

  23. i’ve been making webkinz & zhu zhu pet clothes for my daughter and her friends for a while now. it’s a lot of fun & then they’ve got custom clothes for their critters that no one else has. plus, it gives me something fun and sort of productive to do. so easy & a great way to use up scraps. i love your ideas here for costumes. i did a bride veil, but haven’t quite figured out how to do a groom outfit yet. boys options are harder.
